Prosthodontic Treatment

This is the branch of dentistry that deals with the replacement of missing teeth and related oral structures by artificial devices such as implants, bridges and partial or full dentures.

A dental implant is a fixture that interfaces with the bone of the jaw to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or a denture. The basis for modern dental implants is a biologic process called osseointegration where fixtures made of special materials form an intimate bond to bone. The implant fixture is first placed and after healing is allowed to enable osseointegration, a crown or any other prosthetic device is attached. At Sarkis Dental Clinic, we assess the cases which may benefit from implants and we work in close co-operation with a team of specialists to insert the implants so that it is done perfectly from the first time.

Success or failure of implants depends on the health of the person receiving it, medications which affect the chances of osseointegration and the health of the tissues in the mouth. The amount of stress that will be put on the implant during normal function is also evaluated. Planning the position and number of implants is key to the long-term health of the prosthetic since the forces created during chewing can be significant.

A traditional bridge is made by creating crowns for the teeth on either side of the space of the missing tooth (or teeth) and placing a false tooth or teeth between the crowns. The whole bridge is then cemented to the teeth on either side of the space. The teeth on either side of the space have to be in a good condition to support the bridge. There are other types of bridges as well. A cantilever bridge is held in the mouth by one or more crowns on only one side of the space where a tooth is missing. A Maryland bonded bridge consists of a metal framework with "wings" on each side. The wings are bonded to the back of your existing teeth and the false teeth are also bonded to the framework.

Dentures are dental appliances used to replace a number of missing teeth (Partial Dentures) or all the teeth in one or both jaws (Full Dentures). Dentures can be manufactured of different materials to suit the specific needs of every person. At Sarkis Dental Clinic we can provide all types of dentures to our patients.
